On April 27, 2020, it was reported that the Alzheimer’s Association is partnering with assisted living and skilled nursing centers, providing them with best practice guidelines. These guidelines aim to help families connect with residents while nursing homes remain closed to visitors. The Alzheimer’s Association provided the following suggestions:

  • Using virtual visits via videoconferencing to bring families closer to their loved ones;
  • Sending photo albums or cards;
  • Sharing a loved one’s favorite music on a device that can be played in their room; and
  • Seeing if the facility will allow an outdoor bird feeder where your loved one can see.

To all individuals residing in a nursing home, we would like to offer our best to you during your time in isolation; it will end soon; stay strong.

Nursing Home Liability

Although Ohio’s economy will gradually reopen, it is unclear when Governor DeWine’s order regarding nursing home visitation will end. Families of residents must remember that Ohio nursing residents have the right to private and unrestricted communications with their families. It is neglect to isolate a resident from his or her family and friends. All residents should have access to telephones upon request. As advanced as our technology is, nursing homes must afford residents the opportunity, and assist where needed, with alternative ways of communicating with family members and friends. Using social suggestions, such as the Alzheimer’s Association’s guidelines, a nursing home can greatly increase resident morale and emotional health during this pandemic. If you are not able to contact your loved one during this period of nursing home isolation, you should always speak with a COVID-19 attorney in your time of need.
