(Akron, OH) – On April 24, 2020, it was reported that multiple nursing homes throughout the country were cited for health violations which put residents’ lives in danger. .

Of the citations issued, three major problems were discovered:

1. Facilities failed to take steps in anticipation of the pandemic, especially after it was first reported in the State of Washington;

2. Facilities continue to take in new residents even when they have woefully inadequate staffing for their current residents; and

3. Facilities are discharging current residents so that they can take in  COVID-19 patients for whim there is considerable reimbursement.

As COVID-19 continues to infect elderly nursing home residents, we would like to send our thoughts and prayers to everyone fighting the virus.

Nursing Home Liability

The failure of a nursing home to operate their infection prevention and control program to provide a safe, sanitary environment, and to help prevent the development and transmission of communicable diseases and infections, such as COVID-19, is nursing home negligence. Every procedure at a nursing home must be scrutinized as a result of COVID-19; our elderly population is too important to ignore. For example, be very wary if your loved one’s nursing home only uses oral thermometers. The use of oral thermometers requires a nursing home resident to remove his or her facemask, putting the resident at risk. If your loved one has become infected by COVID-19, and nursing home procedures are not keeping residents safe, you should always speak with a COVID-19 attorney in your time of need.
